PLYMOUTH, MI – On the first Monday of Lent 2013, the young adults of Juventutem Michigan are happy to announce that they have received the blessing of Archbishop Allen Vigneron and Msgr. Mike LeFevre to organize a Traditional Latin Mass at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament on Friday night, August 30, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. August 30th is the Feast of St. Rose of Lima, according to the calendar of the Missal of Blessed John XXIII, which is used for celebrating the Traditional Latin Mass. The Mass will be celebrated by a young priest of the Archdiocese and will be musically assisted by a choir under the direction of Joseph Balistreri, the Diocesan Director of Music. Blessed Sacrament is the mother church of the Archdiocese and the place for liturgies that bring together the whole local church – such as this past weekend’s liturgy for the Rite of Election, at which those who have been studying in order to convert presented themselves to the bishop and were welcomed to complete the final preparation for entering the Church at the Easter Vigil.
Juventutem Michigan is made up of members of the “Benedict XVI Generation” of the Catholic Church. Young adults, single and married, between the ages of 18 and 35, who are committed to Jesus Christ in the Catholic Church, who love the Traditional Latin Mass (“TLM”) and other timeless practices of the Catholic faith, and who are interested in other instances of Catholic culture. In Michigan, members of Juventutem gather on the last Friday night of each month for a Sung Latin Mass, followed by a dinner, dance, or other young adult social activity.
In a particular way, the papacy of Pope Benedict XVI’s made possible the August Cathedral Mass. This Friday, February 22nd, the Feast of St. Peter’s Chair at Antioch, members of Juventutem Michigan will gather at Holy Family Church (Greektown) with parishioners and with others for a TLM prayed in thanksgiving for the Pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI. Afterward, there will be a simple, free dinner for all – donations accepted.
It is believed that a TLM was last celebrated at Blessed Sacrament in the 1960s. Cardinal Maida permitted the beginning of the restoration of the TLM in the parishes of the Archdiocese in 2004, when he gave an indult (“order of permission”) for the TLM to be celebrated at St. Josaphat Catholic Church, near Wayne State. In 2007, Pope Benedict released his motu proprio Summorum Pontificum, which legislated that the TLM had never been abrogated and provided that, where there is any demand in a parish, the parish pastor may make the decision to offer the TLM or to provide for its celebration.
Since returning to Detroit, Archbishop Vigneron has confirmed faithful using the prayers in the Extraordinary Form ritual books and met with members of Detroit’s Tridentine community. The TLM is celebrated every day at Assumption Grotto and every weekend at St. Josaphat, Detroit; SS. Cyril & Methodius, Sterling Heights; and St. Edward, Lakeport.
Formed in March 2012 and launched that April, Juventutem Michigan has brought together more than 250 young adults in the state of Michigan in the course of the dozen plus liturgies and other gatherings that it has organized during its first year.

PLYMOUTH, MICHIGAN – Los jóvenes de Juventutem Michigan se alegran en anunciar que han recibido la bendición del Arzobispo Allen Vigneron y el Monseñor Mike LeFevre para organizar una Misa Tradicional en Latín en la Catedral Most Blessed Sacrament el viernes 30 de agosto de 2013, Fiesta de Santa Rosa de Lima según el calendario del misal del Beato Juan XXIII, a las 7:00 de la noche. Un sacerdote joven de la arquidiócesis celebrará la misa y un coro bajo la dirección de Joseph Balistreri, el director de música diocesano, la acompañará musicalmente. Todos quedan invitados a asistir a esta misa.
Most Blessed Sacrament es la iglesia matriz de la arquidiócesis y el lugar para las liturgias que reúnen a toda la iglesia local – como la del Rito de Elección del Catecumenado que se celebró este fin de semana pasado, en el cual aquellos que han estado estudiando para su conversión se presentaron ante el obispo y fueron bienvenidos a la fase de preparación final para ingresar a la Iglesia en la Vigilia Pascual.
Juventutem Michigan está compuesto de miembros de la “Generación Benedicto XVI”. Estos jóvenes, solteros y casados, entre las edades de 18 y 35 años, están comprometidos con Jesucristo, son amantes de la Misa Tradicional en Latín y otras prácticas inmemoriales de la fe y les interesan otras instancias de cultura católica. En Michigan, Juventutem se reúne el último viernes de cada mes para una Misa Cantada en Latín, seguida de una cena, baile u otra actividad para jóvenes.
De una forma particular, fue el pontificado del Papa Benedicto XVI el que hizo posible la Misa Tradicional en la catedral en agosto; y esta día de la Fiesta de la Cátedra de San Pedro en Antioquía, el viernes 22 de febrero, Juventutem se reunirá en la Parroquia Holy Family (Greektown) para una misa celebrada en acción de gracias por el pontificado del Papa Benedicto XVI. Seguido habrá una sencilla cena gratis para todos (se aceptan donativos).
Se estima que la última Misa Tradicional celebrada en Most Blessed Sacrament fue en los 1960. El Cardenal Maida dio paso a la restauración de la Misa Tradicional en la diócesis en el año 2004, cuando otorgó un indulto para que se celebrase en la Parroquia St. Josaphat. En el 2007, el Papa Benedicto emitió Summorum Pontificum, el cual legisló que la Misa Tradicional no había sido abrogada nunca y que, si hay demanda para ella en una parroquia, el párroco puede tomar la decisión de ofrecer la Misa Tradicional o hacer arreglos para su celebración.
Desde su regreso a Detroit, el Arzobispo Vigneron ha celebrado confirmaciones usando las oraciones en el ritual de la Forma Extraordinaria y se ha encontrado con miembros de la comunidad de la Misa Tradicional en Detroit. La Misa Tradicional se celebra todos los días en la Parroquia Assumption Grotto y todos los fines de semana en St. Josaphat, Detroit; Ss. Cyril & Methodius, Sterling Heights; y St. Edward, Lakeport.
