On Pentecost Sunday and Pentecost Monday 2013, Juventutem Michigan is taking over organization of the Pilgrimage for Christian Culture for the first time.  We believe that ordinary lay Catholics can and should work together to transform our culture.

A pilgrimage is a journey made to a holy place or shrine for the sanctification of the pilgrim; with the purpose of venerating a saint or martyr associated with the site; to pray to God; to ask for supernatural aid; to give thanks for favors received; or to discharge a religious obligation. The arduous journey, offered joyfully to God, represents our spiritual pilgrimage to the Heavenly City.

Modeled after the annual 10,000 pilgrim Pèlerinage de Chartres Pentecôte (which JM’s organizers have observed from afar) and the 100 pilgrim Pilgrimage to Our Lady of the Cape (which JM board members made, in 2012), 2013′s Pentecost Pilgrimage continues the focus that Ann Arbor’s Generation Christ identified when founding the pilgrimage in 2010: Christian Culture – both making concrete efforts towards Christian Culture in our liturgies and celebrations en route and praying that God would inspire the pilgrims as to how they might best win the culture for Christ when the pilgrimage has been completed.

Mass is celebrated each day of the pilgrimage in the Extraordinary Form of the Latin Rite, the traditional liturgy of the Roman Catholic Church, by pastors who have welcomed us to visit their parishes.  The pilgrimage will begin on Sunday, May 19th, when Msgr. Edward Hankiewicz celebrates a 12:30 p.m. Missa Cantata at St. Mary, Lowell, MI.  The pilgrims will then walk 33 miles to Westphalia, lodging for the night at the pilgrimage’s midway point, SS. Peter and Paul in Ionia.  The pilgrimage will conclude on Monday, May 20, when Fr. James Conlon celebrates a 5:00 p.m. Missa Cantata at St. Mary, Westphalia, MI.  Afterward there will be a picnic and party for pilgrims and other Mass attendees.

We hope that a chaplain will be available to hear confessions throughout the pilgrimage, en route, in camp or before Mass.

During the first day, the pilgrimage route follows rail trails – near, alongside, and over the Grand River, from Lowell to Ionia.  Pilgrims who make the first day’s travels are strongly encouraged to wear full hiking boots, as track ballast (large, crushed rocks) covers the day’s whole route.  During the second day, tennis shoes will probably suffice for travel over paved pathways and dirt roads. There is one long railingless bridge that the first day’s pilgrims will cross.

We asked that you register and contribute $30 (one day pilgrim) or $40 (both day pilgrim) to support the efforts of our logistics pilgrims (whose efforts are modeled on Marie Reine’s St. Joseph Chapter and who will provide for food, water, and shelter, and will work to address medical needs and emergencies).  If you cannot afford that whole amount, please donate what you can.

PLYMOUTH, MI – On the first Monday of Lent 2013, the young adults of Juventutem Michigan are happy to announce that they have received the blessing of Archbishop Allen Vigneron and Msgr. Mike LeFevre to organize a Traditional Latin Mass at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament on Friday night, August 30, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. August 30th is the Feast of St. Rose of Lima, according to the calendar of the Missal of Blessed John XXIII, which is used for celebrating the Traditional Latin Mass. The Mass will be celebrated by a young priest of the Archdiocese and will be musically assisted by a choir under the direction of Joseph Balistreri, the Diocesan Director of Music. Blessed Sacrament is the mother church of the Archdiocese and the place for liturgies that bring together the whole local church – such as this past weekend’s liturgy for the Rite of Election, at which those who have been studying in order to convert presented themselves to the bishop and were welcomed to complete the final preparation for entering the Church at the Easter Vigil.

Juventutem Michigan is made up of members of the “Benedict XVI Generation” of the Catholic Church. Young adults, single and married, between the ages of 18 and 35, who are committed to Jesus Christ in the Catholic Church, who love the Traditional Latin Mass (“TLM”) and other timeless practices of the Catholic faith, and who are interested in other instances of Catholic culture. In Michigan, members of Juventutem gather on the last Friday night of each month for a Sung Latin Mass, followed by a dinner, dance, or other young adult social activity.

In a particular way, the papacy of Pope Benedict XVI’s made possible the August Cathedral Mass. This Friday, February 22nd, the Feast of St. Peter’s Chair at Antioch, members of Juventutem Michigan will gather at Holy Family Church (Greektown) with parishioners and with others for a TLM prayed in thanksgiving for the Pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI. Afterward, there will be a simple, free dinner for all – donations accepted.

It is believed that a TLM was last celebrated at Blessed Sacrament in the 1960s. Cardinal Maida permitted the beginning of the restoration of the TLM in the parishes of the Archdiocese in 2004, when he gave an indult (“order of permission”) for the TLM to be celebrated at St. Josaphat Catholic Church, near Wayne State. In 2007, Pope Benedict released his motu proprio Summorum Pontificum, which legislated that the TLM had never been abrogated and provided that, where there is any demand in a parish, the parish pastor may make the decision to offer the TLM or to provide for its celebration.

Since returning to Detroit, Archbishop Vigneron has confirmed faithful using the prayers in the Extraordinary Form ritual books and met with members of Detroit’s Tridentine community. The TLM is celebrated every day at Assumption Grotto and every weekend at St. Josaphat, Detroit; SS. Cyril & Methodius, Sterling Heights; and St. Edward, Lakeport.

Formed in March 2012 and launched that April, Juventutem Michigan has brought together more than 250 young adults in the state of Michigan in the course of the dozen plus liturgies and other gatherings that it has organized during its first year.

In the ‘spring’ of the year, at the time when kings would go out to war, it is appropriate that juvenes – when there is a break from studies – should go out vigorously, in service of God and man.

To that end, Juventutem Michigan has teamed up with Generation Christ – a young adult Eucharistic Adoration group based at St. Thomas the Apostle, Ann Arbor – to carry out a first corporate expedition to Clear Creek Abbey, Oklahoma – Our Lady’s buckle on the Bible Belt.  One team leader and up to six male students will make the trip.

Departing Ann Arbor at noon on Friday, March 1, 2013, they aim to arrive by the next morning, March 2, and to begin their service by participating in the annual Abbey Work Day – everyone may register at: www.abbeyworkday.com – during which hundreds of lay men and women lend a hand to help the monks maintain the property and build for the future.  When the other volunteers return to their ordinary duties of life, the Michigan men will remain and will, to the extent permitted by the Benedictine way of life, join in the brothers’ life of work and prayer.

On Friday evening, January 25, 2013, more than 400 people packed Old St. Mary Catholic Church, Chinatown, DC, for a Requiem Mass celebrated by Chicago Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Perry and prayed for the repose of the souls of Nellie Gray, Robert Casey, and other prior leaders of the pro-life movement.  Commenting on the 40th sad anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision and the March for Life, Bishop Perry encouraged the hundreds of young adults in attendance in taking up the project of advancing the culture of life.  Afterward, more than 150 young adults gathered nearby at Casa Italiana Hall for a delightful reception and an introduction to the International Juventutem Federation, with a particular encouragement to start more American chapters and to participate in young adult pilgrimages in North America and beyond.  Copies of Laudamus Te were distributed to young adults in attendance.

A big Thank You to all of those who helped make the Mass possible: Fr. Alfred Harris, Pastor of Old St. Mary, who welcomed us to his parish; Fr. Gregory Pendergraft, FSSP, the Master of Ceremonies of the Mass, who brought in the team of clerics, trained the altar servers, and brought the beautiful vestments; Fr. Karl Marsolle, FSSP; Dcn. Joseph DeGuzman, FSSP; Fr. Benoit Guichard, FSSP; Msgr. Charles Pope, who sat in choir and read the translations of the epistle and gospel; Msgr. Francis Nave, who sat in choir and hopes to help young adults establish a Juventutem chapter near Bath, Pennsylvania; Canon Jean Marie Moreau, who sat in choir and has assisted Juventutem Boston in the past; Wassim Sarweh, the principle cantor and guest director of the schola; David Sullivan and the Schola of St. Mary; Michael Collins and Chorus Sine Nomine; Miss Eva Radel for tirelessly orchestrating every detail of the social and many of the Mass, including her five brother who served as altar boys.

Thanks also to the Paulus Institute, which organized a Mass of commemoration for Nellie Gray on the morning of the March for Life and helped promote the Requiem Mass, as well as Fr. Zuhlsdorf who helped get the word out and has published some pictures showing how packed the church was.

Overnight, we found that The Paulus Institute has made available a large PDF poster (sampled, above) advertising the  Missa Cantata commemorating Nellie Gray, on the morning of the March for Life: 8:00 a.m. – Friday, January 25th –  Old St. Mary’s (also the site of the Juventutem’s Pontifical Mass, that evening).

Shortly after the conclusion of the 40th March for Life in Washington, D.C., Catholics from across the nation will gather with Chicago auxiliary bishop Joseph Perry and members of Juventutem Michigan for a 6:00 p.m. Sung Pontifical Mass at St. Mary Mother of God Catholic Church. (This liturgy is variously known as the “Traditional Latin Mass,” “Tridentine Mass,” “Extraordinary Form Mass,” “Usus Antiquior,” etc.)

The Mass is open to all ages. After Mass, clergy and young adults (18-35 years old) will gather nearby for fine conversation, an introduction to the International Juventutem Federation, and a simple pizza & wine dinner. Facebook.

The name “Juventutem” itself is the Latin word for “youth” (in the accusative case) and it appears in the opening prayers of the traditional Mass. Through the actions of Juventutem Michigan, more than three hundred different young adults have attended Traditional Latin Masses around the state of Michigan since our founding in March 2012 – stories of the first nine months.

Nach dem Abschluss des 40. March for Life in Washington, D.C., werden sich Katholiken aus dem ganzen Land mit Weihnbischof Joseph Perry aus Chicago und Mitgliedern von Juventutem Michigan versammeln, um um 18:00 Uhr ein gesungenes Pontifikalamt in der katholischen Kirche St. Mary Mother of God zu feiern. Der Name “Juventutem” ist das lateinische Wort für “Jugend” (im Akkusativ) und kommt im Eröffnungsgebet der traditionellen Messe vor. Durch die Aktivitäten von Juventutem Michigan haben seit März 2012 mehr als 300 verschiedene junge Erwachsene traditionelle lateinische Messen in Michigan besucht – Geschichten der ersten neun Monate.

John Zuhlsdorf) agora noticia que o Instituto Paulusorganizou uma Missa Cantata em comemoração a Nellie Gray, fundadora da Marcha pela Life, às 8 h da sexta-feira, 25 de janeiro, na manhã do dia da Marcha pela Vida, na Velha Igreja de Sta. Maria (mesmo local da missa à noite).”O Instituto Paulus, uma organização católica dedicada à propagação da Liturgia Sagrada, patrocinará a Missa. O dia da Missa e da Marcha pela Vida deste ano é providencialmente a Festa da Conversão de S. Paulo, o santo patrono do instituto.”

Logo após a conclusão da 40ª Marcha pela Vida em Washington, D.C., católicos de todo o país se reunirão com o bispo auxiliar de Chicago, Joseph Perry, e membros da Juventutem Michigan para uma Missa Pontifícia cantada às 18 h na Igreja de Sta. Maria Mãe de Deus (Esta liturgia é conhecida como “” Missa Tradicional em Latim, “Missa Tridentina”, “Missa na Forma Extraordinária”, “Usus Antiquior” etc.).

A Missa está aberta a pessoas de todas as idades. Após a Missa, os clérigos e os jovens adultos (de 18 a 35 anos) se reunião para discussões, uma introdução à Federação Internacional Juventutem e um jantar simples com pizza e vinho. Facebook.

O próprio nome “Juventutem” é a palavra latina para “juventude” (no caso acusativo) e aparece nas preces de abertura da Missa tradicional. Através das ações da Juventutem Michigan, mais de trezentos diferentes jovens perticiparam de Missas Tradicionais em Latim pelo estado de Michigan desde a nossa fundação em março de 2012 – histórias dos primeiros nove meses.

In addition to the Juventutem Pontifical Mass that is to follow the 40th March for Life, Fr. Z is now reporting that The Paulus Institute has organized a Missa Cantata commemorating Nellie Gray, the founder of the March for Life, at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, January 25th, the morning of the March for Life, at Old St. Mary’s (also the site of the evening Mass).

“The Paulus Institute, a Catholic organization dedicated to the propagation of the Sacred Liturgy, will sponsor the Mass. The day of the Mass and this year’s March for Life is providentially the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul, the patron saint of the institute.”

Friday, January 25, 2013 – 6:00 p.m. – St. Mary Mother of God

Shortly after the conclusion of the 40th March for Life in Washington, D.C., Catholics from across the nation will gather with Chicago auxiliary bishop Joseph Perry and members of Juventutem Michigan for a 6:00 p.m. Sung Pontifical Mass at St. Mary Mother of God Catholic Church. (This liturgy is variously known as the “Traditional Latin Mass,” “Tridentine Mass,” “Extraordinary Form Mass,” “Usus Antiquior,” etc.)

The Mass is open to all ages. After Mass, clergy and young adults (18-35 years old) will gather nearby for fine conversation, an introduction to the International Juventutem Federation, and a simple pizza & wine dinner. Facebook.

The name “Juventutem” itself is the Latin word for “youth” (in the accusative case) and it appears in the opening prayers of the traditional Mass. Through the actions of Juventutem Michigan, more than three hundred different young adults have attended Traditional Latin Masses around the state of Michigan since our founding in March 2012 – stories of the first nine months.

Además de la Misa Pontifical de Juventutem que seguirá a la 40ma Marcha Pro-Vida, el P. Zuhlsdorf ahora nos informa que el Instituto Paulus ha organizado una Misa Cantada conmemorando a Nellie Gray, la fundadora de la Marcha Pro-Vida, en la Parroquia Old St. Mary’s (la misma que la misa de por la tarde).

“El Instituto Paulus, una organización católica dedicada a la propagación de la Sagrada Liturgia, ausipciará esta misa. El día de la misa y la Marcha Pro-Vida de este año providencialmente coincide con la Fiesta de la Conversión de San Pablo, el santo patrón del instituto.”

(A esta liturgia también se le conoce diversamente como “misa tradicional en latín”, “misa tridentina”, “misa en la forma extraordinaria”, “uso antigüo”, etc.)

Zusätzlich zum Juventutem Pontifikalamt, das im Anschluss an den 40. March for Life (dt. Marsch für das Leben) stattfindet, berichtet jetzt Fr. Z, dass The Paulus Instituteeine Missa Cantata in Gedenken an Nellie Gray, der Gründerin des March for Life, organisiert hat. Die Missa Cantata wird am Freitag, den 25. Januar, um 8:00 Uhr, am Morgen des March of Life in Old St. Mary’s stattfinden (dort ist auch die Messe am Abend).”The Paulus Institute, eine katholische Organisation, die sich der Verbreitung der heiligen Liturgie widmet, wird diese Messe unterstützen. In late September, on the feast of the martyr St. Wenceslas, Assumption Grotto first welcomed one of Juventutem Michigan’s monthly gatherings for Mass and dinner.  Last night, on the feast of those first martyrs for Christ, the Holy Innocents, Juventutem Michigan was welcomed back for a beautiful Missa Cantata celebrated by Fr. Robert Slaton, who was ordained for the Archdiocese of Detroit in September 2012.

After Mass, more than 60 young adults, clerics, and musicians gathered for a a Wigilia-like dinner at Hamtramck’s Polish Village Cafe.  Christmas carols were sung in English, German, Latin, Polish (kinda), and French.  (Pictures to be posted after while)

On Tuesday, some members of Juventutem Michigan will gather for a Holy Day of Obligation Mass in Battle Creek.

At the end of January, Juventutem Michigan has organized a Pontifical Mass at the March for Life.  Please tell your friends.
